Cutest piglets on the planet

Large Black!
Perfect for the pasture

"Since I've got the pigs from you I find that raising pigs is something that I'd like to do on an ongoing basis. First let me thank you for the tips and advice you gave me. The pigs are doing well and are very gentle, unless you throw in a watermelon..."
"Lincoln was a real champ on the long drive home. He slept as long as the truck was in motion, and when we stopped periodically, he would get up and talk to us softly. The kids sang "Lincoln, Lincoln, Bo-binkon, etc.." to him and gave him treats along the way...this afternoon was full of sunshine, and he frolicked around with the dogs and the goats. He is such a joy! We love him so much already!"
"Hello from Oklahoma! We wanted to thank you again for all the help, moral support, and advice! Thanks so much! Ringo's (the GOS cross boar we purchased from you) first two litters have sold even before weaning - except for two little boys. His next litter (due this week) has already been purchased!!! WOW! Thanks again!"

You've found the Heritage Hogs you were looking for!

We are Helen and Brian Wright and we welcome you to paradise! Homegrown Acres is a family run, sustainable small farm in the Missouri Ozark Mountains. We have rare, heritage Large Black hogs for sale; Gloucestershire Old Spot (GOS) hogs for sale; and heritage cross pigs for sale. We can provide breeding singles and pairs from our many distinct bloodlines. We specialize in providing breeding pairs!

Homegrown Acres is one of the largest breeders of rare swine in the United States. We have international sales and a reputation as a leading innovator of humane, sustainable swine management practices.

If you want hogs that pay for themselves then start your breeding herds now! The market for these hogs has never been better! Since 2008, as the economy tanked, prices for these hogs stayed stable and are now increasing. If you want your farm to benefit from this market then right now is the time to start.

If you enjoy living a natural life and want to have livestock that reflects your desire for healthy animals, living in a natural environment, then Large Black hogs and GOS are the ones for you! If you want pigs that are friendly, docile, good moms and love to be around you, then you cannot find better pigs! If you want pigs that will easily live outside, eating the free feed that grows on your farm and in your pasture and woods, and are hardy in the heat and cold, then get Large Blacks and GOS!

If you like the idea of being part of a larger movement dedicated to the preservation of rare breeds, then they are natural choices. There are currently a relative handful of each breed registered in the United States, a fraction of the number needed to ensure the long term health of this breed in the U.S. Large Black and GOS hog breeders are working very hard to improve the individual hogs and conserve the critically necessary genetics of these heritage breeds of hogs.

We are dedicated to making this process pleasant and rewarding for you! Every time one of our customers tells us that they are doing great with the pigs they got from us, well, that is one of the primary reasons we do what we do. We are in this for the hogs and for the small farms that raise them. You can expect lots of advice about selecting good breeding pigs; developing your farm to provide the best environment and easiest management practices; what to learn before you start raising your pigs and how to handle problems when they arise.  We take these responsibilities seriously - breeding heritage hogs is all we do!  Click here to read some of our articles.

We are also dedicated to the improvement of these rare breeds and to sustainable and humane husbandry practices.  Homegrown Acres was an early leader in the movement to lower the average inbreeding in these breeds and we are happy that our efforts are directly contributing to the breeds recovery. We are active in several organizations and forums relating to heritage breeds, homesteading and small farming and we manage the preferred registry for select heritage hog breeds, the Heritage Hog Breeders Club. Brian is also the former Secretary and Registrar for the Large Black Hog Association.

We do not notch our piglet's ears for identification; instead we attach USDA approved ear tags. We believe this is a more humane method of identification and it meets the respective registry's requirements as well as the requirements of animal welfare certification organizations. We also don't cut off their tails, or teeth, or any of the other typical practices used in the past that are just not necessary when pigs are raised in a humane environment. No antibiotics or artificial growth enhancers, no hormones, no restaurant scraps; we just don't do that. All of our hogs live on pasture and we provide complete hog feed, good vegetables and the occasional watermelon as supplements. We decided long ago that if we couldn't manage our farm humanely, if we couldn't treat our livestock with respect and allow them to live in a natural environment, then we just wouldn't be farmers.

Most folks visit our farm to pick up their pigs but we can ship by air. Check our Purchase Info page for details.
