“Since this is my first time raising pigs for butcher I am a bit unsure of calculating the amount of time to get them there. The pigs were born mid Feb, and according to my measurements they are about 65 lbs right now. If they grow at the same rate, it seems to me it will take another 3.5 months and that seems quite long.”
My semi-helpful response:
“Get at least three dates for the butcher, about a week apart, beginning about six months after birth.
The first time you plan to take them to the butcher, they won’t let you load them into the trailer. You’ll bribe them with treats, try in vain to push them into the trailer, a few will load and then jump out as you try to get the others in, you’ll try to corner them with a panel of plywood only to learn that big hogs are still really quick and agile.
The second time it will be raining and after a couple of hours of slipping and sliding you will curse at the hogs and give up. You see, mud doesn’t bother them and they can run in it just as easily as anything. You’ll then call the butcher and ask, “Can’t I just shoot these pigs and bring them to you?”
The third time will work. Because you left the trailer in their paddock after the last try (out of frustration) they have started using it as their bedroom. You snuck up on them at daybreak and slammed the doors shut before they could wake up and see what was happening. They still won’t think they’re trapped; they’ll just think it’s playtime again.”
I wish this weren’t true…
